Prototype and model: The Vectron Dual Mode combines the best of both worlds: a modern dual-mode locomotive that can operate both electrically and with diesel power – flexible, powerful, and environmentally friendly. Developed by Siemens Mobility based on the proven Vectron DE, this locomotive seamlessly handles transitions between electrified and non-electrified tracks. Since its introduction in 2019, the series has established itself as a forward-looking concept. The 248 series (Vectron Dual Mode) and the lighter 249 series (Vectron Dual Mode Light) offer two variants optimized for different operational requirements. The locomotives feature a pantograph, main switch, and surge arrester on the roof to draw energy directly from the overhead line. Thanks to a compact fuel tank, the main transformer fits beneath the locomotive frame – a clever detail enabling efficient dual-mode operation. With an MTU diesel engine (2,000 kW) in the 248 series and a Cummins engine (950 kW) in the 249 series, both variants meet the strict EU Stage V emission standards. Axle loads are optimized: 22.5 t for the 248 and 21 t for the 249. The lighter 249 series also includes practical features such as an Rk 900 shunting coupling, shunting steps with handrails, a monitoring camera between the locomotive halves, and a warning light for remote control operation.
